    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): And David said, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father shewed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.

New International Version (NIV): David thought, 'I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.' So David sent a delegation to express his sympathy to Hanun concerning his father’s death. When David’s envoys came to Hanun in the land of the Ammonites to express sympathy to him,

English Standard Version (ESV): And David said, 'I will deal kindly with Hanun the son of Nahash, for his father dealt kindly with me.' So David sent messengers to console him concerning his father. And David's servants came to the land of the Ammonites to Hanun to console him.

    Introduction

In a world often driven by transactional relationships, the act of showing kindness without expecting anything in return is a rare and precious gift. 1 Chronicles 19:2 offers us a glimpse into such an act, where King David, moved by the memory of kindness once shown to him, decides to extend the same grace to Hanun, the son of Nahash. It’s a story that resonates with the call to love others as we wish to be loved.

This scripture holds lessons in compassion, empathy, and the timeless value of kindness, encouraging us to build bridges rather than barriers.

    Historical Context

The Books of Chronicles, traditionally attributed to Ezra, were written after the Babylonian exile to remind the Israelites of their history and God’s faithfulness. This particular verse takes place during King David’s reign, a time marked by both military conquests and personal alliances. Nahash had once shown kindness to David, likely during his flight from Saul, creating a bond between David and the house of Ammon. This historical backdrop highlights the importance of loyalty and reciprocity in ancient Near Eastern cultures.
