    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): “(For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)”

New International Version (NIV): “The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us.”

English Standard Version (ESV): “the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us.”

    Introduction

What is life? What is its essence and purpose? Is there more to life than we see, feel, and touch? These are questions that have been asked since time immemorial. In 1 John 1:2, the apostle John answers these fundamental questions by testifying about the nature of “Life” – a life that is eternal, that was seen, experienced, and shared. This life, he affirms, is Jesus Christ.

    Historical Context

1 John is one of the three epistles written by the apostle John, who also authored the Gospel of John and Revelation. This verse was written around A.D. 90, towards the latter part of John’s life. John’s purpose was to address the rising heresy of Gnosticism that denied the incarnation of Jesus Christ. He sought to reassure believers about the authenticity of their faith and to assert Jesus’ manifestation as the eternal life.

    Key Word Analysis

The key words in this verse are Life, Manifested, and Eternal Life. The term ‘Life’ in its Greek form ‘Zoe’ is used to denote ‘divine life’ or ‘life as God has it.’ ‘Manifested’ comes from the Greek word ‘phaneroo,’ meaning ‘to make visible or known.’ ‘Eternal Life’ refers not just to perpetual life, but to a quality of life, life ‘as God has it’ – pure, sanctified, and in communion with Him.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse reveals that Jesus is the physical manifestation of the divine and eternal life that was with God the Father. It highlights the testimony of the apostles who saw, witnessed, and proclaimed Jesus, thus affirming the truth of His incarnation.

    Life Application

In our daily lives, we should seek to know Jesus, the divine life who has appeared to us. Like the apostles, we should bear witness to the eternal life we’ve experienced in Christ, sharing this truth with others.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

“Beloved, I am the life that was made manifest to you. I was with the Father, and I came so you might have this divine, eternal life. See me, know me, and bear witness to the transformation I bring. Share this life with others, that they too may know and experience it.”

    Prayer Prompt

Dear Lord, thank you for manifesting the divine life in Jesus Christ. Help us to truly see, experience, and bear witness to this eternal life. Guide us to share this transformative power with others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
