    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.

New International Version (NIV): This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the LORD, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat.

English Standard Version (ESV): So it went on year by year. As often as she went up to the house of the LORD, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat.

    Introduction

The book of 1 Samuel was written during the time of the judges before the establishment of the monarchy in Israel. It is traditionally attributed to the prophet Samuel, with possible contributions by the prophets Nathan and Gad. The setting is a period marked by social and spiritual upheaval, where personal stories like Hannah’s reflect broader themes of God’s faithfulness and human longing.
