    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): Behold, the days come, that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store unto this day, shall be carried into Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the LORD.

New International Version (NIV): The time will surely come when everything in your palace, and all that your predecessors have stored up until this day, will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the LORD.

English Standard Version (ESV): Behold, the days are coming, when all that is in your house, and that which your fathers have stored up till this day, shall be carried to Babylon. Nothing shall be left, says the LORD.

    Introduction

Imagine being told that everything you and your ancestors have worked for will be taken away. This is the stark warning given to King Hezekiah in 2 Kings 20:17, a prophecy that paints a picture of inevitable loss. Yet, within this verse lies a profound message not just for Hezekiah, but for us today. It is a call to reflect on what we value and the temporal nature of earthly treasures.

    Historical Context

2 Kings was authored by an unknown writer, documenting the history of the kings of Israel and Judah. This verse is part of a narrative where the prophet Isaiah delivers a forewarning to King Hezekiah about the future exile of Judah to Babylon. This prophecy occurs after Hezekiah shows the Babylonian envoys all his treasures, revealing his pride and shortsightedness. Written around the 6th century BC, the book serves as a theological commentary on the faithfulness of the kings to God’s covenant.

Behold: A call to attention, signaling the importance of the message.

Days come: A prophetic expression indicating certainty about future events.

All that is in thine house: Refers to the entirety of Hezekiah’s wealth and possessions.

Nothing shall be left: Emphasizes the totality of the forthcoming desolation.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse reveals God’s sovereignty and the consequences of pride and disobedience. It serves as a reminder that earthly possessions are fleeting, and our true security lies in God alone. It also highlights the importance of humility and reliance on God rather than material wealth.

    Life Application

As modern readers, we should take this verse as a reminder to evaluate our priorities. Are we placing too much value on material possessions? Let us focus on what matters eternally, nurturing our relationship with God and serving others. Let this verse inspire us to live with humility and trust in God’s provision, knowing that true treasure is found in Him.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

Beloved, do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven.
