    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): And when the king asked the woman, she told him. So the king appointed unto her a certain officer, saying, Restore all that was hers, and all the fruits of the field since the day that she left the land, even until now.

New International Version (NIV): The king asked the woman about it, and she told him. Then he assigned an official to her case and said to him, 'Give back everything that belonged to her, including all the income from her land from the day she left the country until now.'

English Standard Version (ESV): And when the king asked the woman, she told him. So the king appointed an official for her, saying, 'Restore all that was hers, together with all the produce of the fields from the day that she left the land until now.'

    Introduction

Have you ever felt like you lost something precious? A moment, an opportunity, a blessing? The story in 2 Kings 8:6 is a powerful reminder of God’s ability to restore. Here, we see a divine intervention that speaks deeply to our hearts about God’s justice and mercy. The Shunammite woman, who had faced loss and displacement, finds herself before a king who, moved by her story, commands the restoration of all she had lost. This narrative demonstrates that no situation is beyond the reach of God’s restorative power.

    Historical Context

The Book of Kings, traditionally attributed to the prophet Jeremiah, was written during the Babylonian exile. 2 Kings 8:6 is set in the time of Elisha the prophet. The Shunammite woman had previously shown kindness to Elisha, and upon returning from a seven-year sojourn to avoid famine, she finds her land taken. Her appeal to the king culminates in a divine moment of justice and restoration.

    Key Word Analysis

Restore: The Hebrew word ‘shub’ implies a complete return to an original state, reflective of God’s nature. Officer: The term used indicates a person of authority and trust, emphasizing the king’s commitment. Fruits of the field: This phrase denotes all produce and income, underscoring the comprehensive nature of restoration.

    Spiritual Insight
