    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:

New International Version (NIV): Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town.

English Standard Version (ESV): Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town.

    Introduction

Matthew 23:34 is a powerful verse where Jesus predicts the persecution of those He will send to teach and guide. This verse is part of a solemn warning to the religious leaders of the time, urging them to recognize the gravity of their actions against God’s messengers. Let’s delve into the significance of this verse and its implications for our faith journey today.

    Historical Context

The Gospel of Matthew is believed to have been written by the apostle Matthew around AD 70-80. In this chapter, Jesus is speaking to the scribes and Pharisees, condemning their hypocrisy and forewarning them about the consequences of rejecting the messengers of God. This was a time when religious leaders held significant influence over the Jewish community, and Jesus’s words were a direct challenge to their authority.

Prophets: In Greek, ‘prophetes’ refers to one who speaks by divine inspiration. Jesus refers to those who are sent by God with His message.

    Life Application

As modern believers, we are called to heed the messages that God sends through His word and His people. This verse challenges us to recognize and support those who are working to spread the gospel, understanding the sacrifices they may endure for the sake of truth.
