    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.

New International Version (NIV): Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

English Standard Version (ESV): Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

    Introduction

The act of anointing is rich with symbolism and history, deeply embedded in the traditions of ancient times. In John 12:3, we find Mary performing an act of profound love and devotion towards Jesus. This simple yet powerful gesture invites us to explore deeper meanings of humility, sacrifice, and worship. Mary’s actions remind us of the essence of true adoration and the beauty of a heart fully surrendered to Christ.

    Historical Context

The Gospel of John was written by the Apostle John, one of Jesus’ closest disciples, around the late first century. The setting of this verse is in Bethany, shortly before the Passover and Jesus’ crucifixion. Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, performs a deeply significant act of worship and devotion by anointing Jesus. This event takes place in a time when Jesus’ followers are grappling with His teachings and the reality of His impending sacrifice.

    Key Word Analysis

Spikenard: A costly perfume, symbolic of great value and sacrifice. The Greek word is nardos, emphasizing its purity and worth.
Anointed: In the Greek, aleipho, meaning to rub or smear, often associated with anointing for ceremonial or religious purposes.
Hair: An act of humility, as a woman’s hair was considered her glory. Mary uses it to serve Jesus, symbolizing surrender and devotion.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse reveals the profound nature of worship and devotion. Mary’s act is not just of service but of deep love and sacrifice, reflecting a heart that recognizes Jesus’ divine worth. It teaches us about the lavishness of love that is fitting for the Savior who is worthy of the best we can offer.

    Life Application

In our daily lives, this verse calls us to reflect on the ways we show our love and devotion to Jesus. Are we offering Him our best, in time, resources, and talents? Just as Mary poured out her expensive perfume, we too are called to pour out our lives in service and love to Him and others.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

My child, I see your heart and your desire to honor Me. Let your love be genuine and your devotion sincere, for in these, I find great delight. Do not withhold the treasure of your heart, but pour it out freely, knowing that I cherish your every act of love. My grace is sufficient for you; walk in the freedom of My love.

    Prayer Prompt

Dear Lord, help me to offer You my whole heart and the best of what I have. Teach me to worship You in spirit and truth, and to live a life that reflects Your love and sacrifice. May my actions bring glory to Your name. Amen.
