    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): And they brought unto him also infants, that he would touch them: but when his disciples saw it, they rebuked them.

New International Version (NIV): People were also bringing babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them.

English Standard Version (ESV): Now they were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them. And when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them.

    Introduction

The image of children being brought to Jesus is one that stirs the heart. In Luke 18:15, we see an earnest desire from parents to have their little ones blessed by the touch of Jesus. This verse captures a tender moment that speaks volumes about Jesus’s love for the young and innocent. But more than this, it challenges us to reflect on our own openness to receive the blessings that Jesus offers. In a world that often overlooks the significance of children, this verse invites us to reevaluate our priorities and attitudes.

    Historical Context

The Gospel of Luke was written by Luke, a physician and companion of the Apostle Paul, around 60-80 AD. Addressed to Theophilus, it aims to provide an orderly account of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. During Jesus’s ministry, children were often undervalued in society. This tender account of children being brought to Jesus highlights His radical approach to inclusivity and His kingdom’s values, where the least are valued as much as the greatest.

    Key Word Analysis

Infants: In Greek, the word ‘βρέφη’ (brephe) refers to very young children, emphasizing their vulnerability and need for care. Touch: The act of touch by Jesus symbolizes blessing, care, and the transmission of divine favor. Rebuked: The Greek word ‘ἐπετίμησαν’ (epetimēsan) indicates a strong disapproval, showing the disciples’ misunderstanding of Jesus’s mission.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse beautifully illustrates God’s heart for the innocent and vulnerable. Jesus’s willingness to welcome children reveals His deep love for all humanity, regardless of age or status. It also underscores His message that the kingdom of God belongs to those who are like children in their humility, trust, and openness.

    Life Application

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to overlook the simple and profound truths embodied by children. This verse calls us to embrace a childlike faith—characterized by trust, innocence, and openness to God’s love. As modern readers, we are encouraged to prioritize nurturing the spiritual development of the young and to approach God with a heart open to His touch.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

    Prayer Prompt

Dear Lord, thank You for Your love that embraces every generation. Help me to approach You with a heart full of childlike faith and wonder. May I never hinder others, especially the young, from coming to You. Amen.
