    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): “Prophesy ye not, say they to them that prophesy: they shall not prophesy to them, that they shall not take shame.”

New International Version (NIV): “Do not prophesy,” their prophets say. “Do not prophesy about these things; disgrace will not overtake us.”

English Standard Version (ESV): “Do not preach”—thus they preach—”one should not preach of such things; disgrace will not overtake us.”

    Introduction

We are living in a time when the truth is sometimes met with hostility, similar to the time when Prophet Micah ministered to the people of God. Micah, a prophet during the 8th century B.C., was tasked with addressing a society that was entrenched in corruption and contempt for the truth. The verse in focus, Micah 2:6, provides a profound insight into the struggle of being a voice for God in a world that is resistant to His message.

The verse echoes the call for silence from those who were uncomfortable with the prophetic word. It unveils the dynamics of a society trying to suppress the truth, a scenario that is not unfamiliar in today’s world. But it also brings to light the strength of the prophetic voice that continues to speak truth in the face of opposition.

    Historical Context

Micah, the author of the book, was a contemporary of the prophet Isaiah. He ministered during the reigns of Kings Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah of Judah. The primary purpose of his ministry was to denounce the social injustices and spiritual corruption of his time. Micah 2:6 was a reflection of the opposition he faced from the people who were not ready to accept God’s word of judgement for their corrupt practices.

    Key Word Analysis

Prophesy: In Hebrew, the word used is “naba” which means to speak or sing by inspiration. It refers to delivering messages from God.

Disgrace: The term “disgrace” or “shame” conveys the idea of dishonor and humiliation. This is the consequence of ignoring the word of God.

Overtake: The term “overtake” in Hebrew is “nasag” which means to reach, attain or catch up with. It signifies imminent judgment.

    Spiritual Insight

The verse reveals the courage and persistence that God instills in His prophets to speak His truth, regardless of opposition. It also indicates the dire consequences that come with suppressing the truth and refusing to heed God’s word.

    Life Application

As believers, we are called to stand for God’s truth, even when it is unpopular or met with resistance. This verse challenges us to be persistent in speaking the truth and spreading God’s word, regardless of the opposition we may face.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

“Beloved, don’t be disheartened when the truth you share about Me is met with resistance. Remember, even my prophets faced opposition. Stay firm, for I am with you. The world needs to hear My message, and I have chosen you to be a voice in the wilderness.”

    Prayer Prompt

Lord, give me the courage to stand firm and speak your truth, even in the face of opposition. Help me to remain faithful to Your word, and to be a beacon of Your light in this world. Amen.
