    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): Therefore, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, I will even do according to thine anger, and according to thine envy which thou hast used out of thy hatred against them; and I will make myself known among them, when I have judged thee.

New International Version (NIV): Therefore as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I will treat you in accordance with the anger and jealousy you showed in your hatred of them and I will make myself known among them when I judge you.

English Standard Version (ESV): Therefore, as I live, declares the Lord GOD, I will deal with you according to the anger and envy that you showed because of your hatred against them, and I will make myself known among them, when I judge you.

    Introduction

Have you ever felt the sting of jealousy or the burn of anger? These emotions can consume us, leading to actions and words we might later regret. Ezekiel 35:11 speaks directly to this human experience. Through this verse, God reveals a profound truth about His justice and His commitment to reveal Himself amidst judgment. As we dive into this passage, let’s explore how it might speak to our own lives today.

    Historical Context

The book of Ezekiel was written by the prophet Ezekiel during the Babylonian exile in the 6th century BC. This specific chapter is part of a prophecy against Mount Seir, representing Edom, a nation that held deep-seated enmity towards Israel. The context is one of divine retribution and justice, where God assures the Israelites that their enemies will be judged for their malice and hatred.

    Key Word Analysis

Anger: The Hebrew word used here is ‘aph,’ which implies nostrils flaring in wrath. It illustrates intense emotion.
Envy: The term ‘qin’ah’ in Hebrew denotes jealousy or zeal, often associated with fervent passion.
Hatred: The word ‘sane’ refers to an intense aversion, highlighting the depth of Edom’s animosity.
Judged: Coming from the Hebrew ‘shaphat,’ it means to govern or pass sentence, signifying divine justice.
Known: ‘Yada’ in Hebrew, meaning to perceive or understand, signifying God’s revelation of Himself.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse reveals the righteous character of God. His judgment is not arbitrary but is proportional to the actions and attitudes of the heart. It underscores that God reveals Himself through acts of justice, making His presence known even amidst judgment. Through this, God assures us that He sees and addresses the injustices we face.

    Life Application

As modern readers, we are called to reflect on our own feelings of anger and jealousy. We should strive to align our hearts with God’s love and justice, rejecting harmful emotions that lead to division. Instead, we can seek to cultivate compassion and understanding in our relationships.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

My child, I see every emotion you harbor, and I know the struggles of your heart. Let go of anger and jealousy, for they cloud your vision of My love. Trust in My justice, and find peace in My presence. I am with you, guiding you towards grace and truth. Beloved, let your heart be a vessel of My love.

    Prayer Prompt

Heavenly Father, cleanse my heart of anger and jealousy. Help me to trust in Your perfect justice and to reflect Your love to others. Guide me in Your truth, so that I may live a life that honors You. Amen.
