    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.

New International Version (NIV): Seek good, not evil, that you may live. Then the Lord God Almighty will be with you, just as you say he is.

English Standard Version (ESV): Seek good, and not evil, that you may live; and so the Lord, the God of hosts, will be with you, as you have said.

    Introduction

In our lives, we are often faced with choices, decisions that ultimately shape our lives. The Book of Amos provides a clear directive to seek good and not evil, a commandment from the Lord that has more profound implications than we often realize. These words are not just about our actions, but also about our hearts and our attitudes.

When we read this verse, we are reminded that seeking goodness is a pathway to life, and it’s this pursuit that enables us to truly walk with the Lord. The Lord God Almighty stands ready to be with those who choose the path of righteousness, affirming their commitment to Him.

    Historical Context

Amos was a prophet from Judah, the Southern Kingdom, but his prophetic ministry was primarily focused on Israel, the Northern Kingdom. He prophesied during the reigns of Uzziah, king of Judah, and Jeroboam II, king of Israel, around 760-755 B.C. During this time, Israel was experiencing political stability and economic prosperity, yet their moral and spiritual condition was in severe decline. Amos’ role was to remind the people to turn back to God and seek what is good, instead of being consumed by their selfish desires and evil doings.

    Key Word Analysis

Seek: This word, which translates as “darash” in Hebrew, implies diligent, intentional searching. It’s not a casual looking, but an earnest quest.

Good: The Hebrew word “tob” alludes not just to the absence of evil but a proactive pursuit of what is beneficial, kind, generous, and just.

Live: The word “chayah” in Hebrew suggests not merely existing, but truly flourishing and thriving in God’s favor and blessing.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse tells us about God’s desire for His people to choose what is good and beneficial, and to reject what is harmful and evil. It reveals God as a loving Father who desires the best for His children, promising His presence and blessing when we choose His way.

    Life Application

In our daily lives, we can apply this verse by consciously choosing what is good over evil. This not only involves our actions but our thoughts, attitudes, and words as well. It means seeking justice, acting kindly, speaking truth, and living in a way that reflects God’s character.
