    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): The carcases of every beast which divideth the hoof, and is not clovenfooted, nor cheweth the cud, are unclean unto you: every one that toucheth them shall be unclean.

New International Version (NIV): Every animal that does not have a divided hoof or that does not chew the cud is unclean for you; whoever touches the carcasses of any of them will be unclean.

English Standard Version (ESV): Every animal that parts the hoof but is not cloven-footed or does not chew the cud is unclean to you. Everyone who touches them shall be unclean.

    Introduction

The dietary laws outlined in Leviticus 11 are among the most detailed in the Old Testament. While they may seem foreign to modern readers, these regulations were vital in shaping the identity and health of the Israelites. Leviticus 11:26 specifically addresses the concept of unclean animals, emphasizing purity and the importance of maintaining a holy life.

    Historical Context

Leviticus was written by Moses around 1445-1405 BC. It was created during the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness after their exodus from Egypt. This book served as a guide for worship and holy living, instructing the Israelites on how to be distinct from the surrounding nations.

    Key Word Analysis

Divideth the hoof: Refers to animals with split hooves, a requirement for clean animals.
Clovenfooted: Fully split hooves, another characteristic of permissible animals.
Cheweth the cud: Animals that regurgitate food to chew it again, indicative of clean animals.
Unclean: Not suitable for consumption or touch according to God’s law.
Toucheth: Physical contact that results in ceremonial impurity.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse highlights God’s desire for His people to live in holiness and distinguish themselves from impurity. It reflects a broader spiritual principle of avoiding what defiles us, urging believers to pursue purity in all aspects of life.

    Life Application

In today’s context, this verse encourages us to evaluate what we allow into our lives, whether it be media, relationships, or habits. Just as the Israelites were called to discernment with their dietary laws, we too are called to discern what is spiritually beneficial.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

Beloved, I call you to a life of purity and holiness. Just as I guided Israel, so I guide you today. Turn away from what soils your heart and mind. Seek My presence, and I will make you whole. My love cleanses and renews you daily.
