    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): And the priest shall look on the plague, after that it is washed: and, behold, if the plague have not changed his colour, and the plague be not spread; it is unclean: thou shalt burn it in the fire; it is fret inward, whether it be bare within or without.

New International Version (NIV): After the article has been washed, the priest is to examine it, and if the mold has not changed its appearance, even though it has not spread, it is unclean. Burn it, no matter which side of the fabric has been spoiled.

English Standard Version (ESV): And the priest shall examine the disease after it has been washed. And if the appearance of the diseased area has not changed, though the disease has not spread, it is unclean. You shall burn it in the fire, whether the rot is on the back or on the front.

    Introduction

Leviticus 13 deals with ancient laws concerning cleanliness and purification. While these laws may seem distant to us today, they offer deep spiritual truths about maintaining purity and seeking discernment. In Leviticus 13:55, God provides a detailed process for identifying and dealing with unclean conditions. This verse addresses both physical and spiritual cleanliness, reminding us of the importance of examining the hidden places in our lives.

    Historical Context

Leviticus was written by Moses, serving as God’s guide to the Israelites on how to live holy lives. These laws were given during the time the Israelites wandered in the desert, aiming to set them apart from other nations. Leviticus 13 outlines procedures for identifying and treating skin diseases and contaminated garments, a metaphor for spiritual vigilance.

    Key Word Analysis

Plaque: The term indicates a form of disease or impurity. In Hebrew, it is ‘nega,’ implying a stroke or plague requiring attention.
Unclean: This term, ‘tamei’ in Hebrew, denotes ritual impurity that separates one from the community and the presence of God.
Burn: Burning was a method of purification, symbolizing the eradication of impurity and sin.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse illustrates the importance of spiritual vigilance and discernment. Just as the priest examined the garments, we must examine our hearts and actions. God calls us to identify and remove sin, ensuring it does not spread or corrupt our lives.

    Life Application

In our modern lives, Leviticus 13:55 challenges us to scrutinize the influences around us. Are there habits or relationships that draw us away from God? This verse encourages us to root out anything that breeds spiritual decay and to pursue purity and holiness actively.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

Beloved, open your heart to My love and guidance. Like the priest who examines diligently, let My Spirit reveal areas in your life needing cleansing. Allow My grace to purify you, casting away all that hinders your spiritual growth. Trust in My love to lead you into a life of holiness and peace.

    Prayer Prompt

Heavenly Father, help me to examine my life with Your wisdom. Reveal the areas that need cleansing and grant me the strength to remove all that is unclean. Create in me a pure heart, O God, that I may walk rightly before You. Amen.
