    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): They shall be holy unto their God, and not profane the name of their God: for the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and the bread of their God, they do offer: therefore they shall be holy.

New International Version (NIV): They must be holy to their God and must not profane the name of their God. Because they present the food offerings to the LORD, the food of their God, they are to be holy.

English Standard Version (ESV): They shall be holy to their God and not profane the name of their God. For they offer the LORD's food offerings, the bread of their God; therefore they shall be holy.

    Introduction

In the midst of the detailed laws given to the Israelites in the book of Leviticus, chapter 21 presents specific instructions for the priests, the sons of Aaron. These instructions are not mere rituals; they are a call to holiness, a divine expectation for those who serve closest to God. This verse reminds us of the sacredness required of those chosen to serve in His presence.

As we delve into Leviticus 21:6, consider how holiness is not just an old covenant requirement, but a timeless call for all who desire to serve God today.

    Historical Context

Leviticus is traditionally attributed to Moses, written during the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness after escaping Egypt, around 1440-1400 BC. The book serves as a manual for the priests and the people, outlining how to live in a way that honors God. Chapter 21 specifically addresses the priests, emphasizing their need to remain holy due to their role in offering sacrifices and maintaining the sanctity of worship.

    Key Word Analysis

Holy: Derived from the Hebrew word ‘qadosh,’ meaning set apart or sacred. Priests are called to a life distinct from the secular, reflecting God’s holiness.

Profane: From the Hebrew ‘chalal,’ implying defilement or desecration. A warning against actions that dishonor God’s name.

Offerings: Refers to sacrifices presented to God, symbolizing dedication and worship. The priests’ role in offerings underscores their need for purity.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse highlights the unique responsibility of those who serve God directly. It underscores the inseparable link between service to God and personal holiness. Just as the priests were to present offerings, modern believers are called to present their lives as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God.

    Life Application

Today, this call to holiness extends to all believers, who are described as a ‘royal priesthood’ in 1 Peter 2:9. We are urged to live lives that honor God, reflecting His character in our actions and choices. Consider how you can consecrate your daily activities, offering them as acts of worship.
