    The Verse

    King James Version (KJV): That we have built us an altar to turn from following the LORD, or if to offer thereon burnt offering or meat offering, or if to offer peace offerings thereon, let the LORD himself require it;

    New International Version (NIV): If we have built our own altar to turn away from the LORD and to offer burnt offerings and grain offerings, or to sacrifice fellowship offerings on it, may the LORD himself call us to account.

    English Standard Version (ESV): If we did this to build an altar to turn away from following the LORD, or if we did so to offer burnt offerings or grain offerings or peace offerings on it, may the LORD himself take vengeance.

    Introduction

    In the book of Joshua, we encounter a moment of tension between the tribes of Israel. Joshua 22:23 captures a pivotal point where motives are questioned, and the purpose of an altar becomes the crux of understanding true worship. This verse challenges us to reflect on our own intentions in our spiritual practices, encouraging a deep dive into the heart of worship.

    Historical Context

    The book of Joshua is attributed to Joshua himself, a leader of Israel after Moses. This particular passage occurs after the Israelites have settled in the Promised Land. The eastern tribes built an altar, prompting fears of rebellion against God, which leads to an investigation and a profound dialogue on faithfulness and unity.

    Key Word Analysis

    Altar: A sacred structure used for worship and sacrifices. In Hebrew, ‘mizbeach’ signifies a place of sacrifice.

    Rebellion: Turning away from God’s commands; in Hebrew ‘pesha’ implies a breach of covenant.

    Burnt Offering: A sacrifice symbolizing complete surrender to God. In Hebrew, ‘olah’ means ‘that which goes up.’

    Spiritual Insight

    Joshua 22:23 reveals the importance of aligning our actions with God’s will. It underscores the need for transparency in our intentions and the significance of community in holding each other accountable. This verse invites us to examine our motivations and ensure our worship is sincere and truthful.

    Life Application

    In today’s world, the lesson from Joshua 22:23 encourages us to assess the ‘altars’ in our lives—our commitments and routines—and ensure they align with God’s will. It prompts us to seek accountability within our faith communities and to prioritize honesty in our spiritual practices.
