    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.

New International Version (NIV): “When you are helping the Hebrew women during childbirth on the delivery stool, if you see that the baby is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let her live.”

English Standard Version (ESV): “When you serve as midwife to the Hebrew women and see them on the birthstool, if it is a son, you shall kill him, but if it is a daughter, she shall live.”

    Introduction

In the opening chapter of Exodus, we find a pivotal moment where the Hebrew people, under Egyptian oppression, face a new and terrifying edict. Pharaoh, feeling threatened by the increasing number of Israelites, commands the Hebrew midwives to kill all newborn boys. This directive sets the stage for dramatic developments in the history of Israel, as God’s hand moves to protect His people and fulfill His promises.

    Historical Context

The book of Exodus, traditionally attributed to Moses, was written to document the Israelites’ slavery in Egypt and their subsequent liberation. This particular verse reflects a time when a new Pharaoh, who did not remember Joseph, feared the growing Israelite population and sought to curb it through infanticide. The midwives’ moral dilemma highlights the broader conflict between faithfulness to God and obedience to earthly authority.

    Key Word Analysis

Midwife: In Hebrew, the word ‘midwife’ signifies a crucial role in sustaining life, placing these women in a position of both power and moral decision-making. Stools: This refers to the birthing stools used during delivery, emphasizing the intimate and critical nature of the midwives’ work. Kill: The direct order to kill the sons reveals the extent of the Pharaoh’s fear and desperation. Daughter: Allowing daughters to live hints at the perceived threat of male offspring, who could become warriors or leaders.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse reveals the tension between human authority and divine purpose. Despite Pharaoh’s oppressive decree, God’s sovereignty and the courage of the faithful midwives demonstrate His commitment to preserving the lineage of His people. It reminds us that God’s plans cannot be thwarted by human schemes.

    Life Application

Today, this verse calls us to examine our own moral choices. When faced with unjust demands from those in authority, we must weigh our actions against the higher calling of justice and faith in God’s greater plan. It encourages believers to stand firm in their convictions, trusting in God’s protection and guidance.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

My beloved, in times of fear and uncertainty, remember that I am with you. Just as the midwives showed courage and faith, so too are you called to stand for what is right. Trust in My love and protection, for I hold your life and purpose in My hands. Be bold, for I have overcome the world. Let your faith shine brightly even in the darkest times.

    Prayer Prompt

Heavenly Father, grant us the strength and courage to stand for righteousness as the Hebrew midwives did. Help us to trust in Your divine plan, even when earthly authorities challenge our faith. May Your will be done in our lives, and may we find peace in Your presence. Amen.
