    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): And Pharaoh's servants said unto him, How long shall this man be a snare unto us? let the men go, that they may serve the LORD their God: knowest thou not yet that Egypt is destroyed?

New International Version (NIV): Pharaoh’s officials said to him, 'How long will this man be a snare to us? Let the people go, so that they may worship the LORD their God. Do you not yet realize that Egypt is ruined?'

English Standard Version (ESV): Then Pharaoh's servants said to him, 'How long shall this man be a snare to us? Let the men go, that they may serve the LORD their God. Do you not yet understand that Egypt is ruined?'

    Introduction

In the heat of the plagues that Egypt faced, we encounter a moment where even Pharaoh’s own servants begin to question his stubbornness. This verse captures a pivotal dialogue, exposing not only the devastation that the plagues have brought but also hinting at a deeper spiritual blindness. It’s a moment that compels us to reflect on the stubbornness that can reside within each of us, and the wake-up calls we might be ignoring in our own lives.

    Historical Context

Exodus was written by Moses and details the events surrounding the Israelites’ escape from Egyptian bondage. This specific verse occurs during the series of plagues that God sent upon Egypt to compel Pharaoh to release the Israelites. Pharaoh’s hardened heart leads to an escalation of plagues from God, each more severe than the last. At this point, Egypt is suffering greatly, and even Pharaoh’s own advisors are urging him to let the Israelites go.

    Key Word Analysis

Snare: In Hebrew, ‘mowqesh’ implies a trap or something that entangles. Here, Moses is seen as a trap to Egypt’s destruction.
Serve: The Hebrew word ‘abad’ means to work or worship. The request is for the Israelites to worship their God freely.
Destroyed: The Hebrew ‘shachath’ suggests complete ruin, highlighting Egypt’s desperate state.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse highlights the destructive power of stubbornness and pride. It serves as a reminder that resisting God’s will leads to ruin. It also reveals God’s patience in giving opportunities for repentance, and how even the most powerful earthly rulers are subject to divine authority. It challenges us to examine our own lives for areas where we resist God’s guidance.

    Life Application

In daily life, this verse encourages us to be attuned to God’s guidance and open to change. It warns against the dangers of stubbornness and pride. By letting go of our own stubborn ways, we allow God to lead us out of potential ruin and into a path of peace and prosperity. It calls us to be flexible and humble, recognizing that sometimes letting go is the path to true freedom.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

My beloved, there are times when the stubbornness of your heart can lead you astray. Just as Pharaoh resisted, there may be areas in your life where you hold on too tightly. Allow Me to guide you, to lead you out of bondage and into freedom. Trust in My plan, for I know the way of peace and abundant life. Do not let pride be your downfall; instead, lean into My love and wisdom.

    Prayer Prompt

Heavenly Father, grant me the humility to recognize when I am resisting Your will. Help me to let go of stubbornness and pride so that I can walk in Your ways. Open my eyes to see the path of life You have laid before me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
