    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): For they covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened; and they did eat every herb of the land, and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left: and there remained not any green thing in the trees, or in the herbs of the field, through all the land of Egypt.

New International Version (NIV): They covered all the ground until it was black. They devoured all that was left after the hail—everything growing in the fields and the fruit on the trees. Nothing green remained on tree or plant in all the land of Egypt.

English Standard Version (ESV): They covered the face of the whole land, so that the land was darkened, and they ate all the plants in the land and all the fruit of the trees that the hail had left. Not a green thing remained, neither tree nor plant of the field, through all the land of Egypt.

    Introduction

The story of the plagues in Egypt is one of the most dramatic narratives in the Bible. Exodus 10:15 captures the severity of one of these plagues—the plague of locusts. Imagine a land so thick with locusts that the earth itself seems to vanish under their writhing masses. This verse vividly depicts the power of God to humble a mighty nation and serves as a reminder of His sovereignty over creation.

    Historical Context

The book of Exodus, traditionally attributed to Moses, recounts the story of Israel’s liberation from Egyptian bondage. The events in Exodus 10 took place in ancient Egypt, around 1446 BC. The plagues were part of God’s plan to demonstrate His power and compel Pharaoh to release the Israelites.

    Key Word Analysis

Covered the face of the whole earth: The Hebrew word for ‘covered’ implies a total, overwhelming presence. Darkened: Symbolizes not just physical darkness but a spiritual dimness as Egypt’s power was shrouded. Devoured: A complete consumption, indicating judgment and destruction.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse reveals God’s supreme authority over nature. It serves as a reminder that God can use any part of creation to fulfill His purposes. The locusts, a symbol of divine judgment, underscore the need for humility and obedience before the Almighty.

    Life Application

In today’s world, this verse encourages us to recognize the power of God in our lives. It challenges us to reflect on areas where we need to yield to God’s will, trusting that His plans are just and righteous, even when they disrupt our own.
