Galatians 5:11 Meaning & Commentary – The Offense of the Cross

    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution? then is the offence of the cross ceased.
New International Version (NIV): Brothers and sisters, if I am still preaching circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been abolished.
English Standard Version (ESV): But if I, brothers, still preach circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been removed.

    Introduction

In this age where we long for acceptance and fear judgment or ridicule, the words of the Apostle Paul in Galatians 5:11 challenge our perceptions. It reminds us of the inherent offense the message of the Cross carries, and how it stands in stark contrast to the world’s ideals. It’s a powerful verse that beckons us into the raw truth of the Gospel and its implications for our lives.

Here, Paul presents a paradox. He asks a rhetorical question: if he were simply preaching the law (circumcision), why would he be persecuted? The answer lies in the radical message of the Cross, which was, and still is, countercultural and offensive to some.

    Historical Context

Galatians is a letter written by the Apostle Paul, likely around 49 AD, to the churches in Galatia. A key issue that Paul addressed was the controversy surrounding Gentile Christians and the Mosaic Law. Some believed that the law, including rituals like circumcision, had to be followed for salvation. Paul, however, preached salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone.

    Key Word Analysis

Preach: From the Greek “kērýssō,” meaning to proclaim or announce with authority. Paul uses it to describe his mission of spreading the Gospel.

Circumcision: A physical sign of the Abrahamic covenant in the Old Testament. Paul uses it symbolically to refer to the law and works-based righteousness.

Offense: The Greek word “skandalon” refers to a stumbling block or cause for error. The cross, representing the Gospel, was offensive to many, particularly those who relied on their works for righteousness.

    Spiritual Insight

The verse emphasizes the radical nature of the Gospel. It reveals that our salvation doesn’t stem from our deeds, but from Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross. It goes against the human inclination towards self-justification and highlights the grace and mercy of God.

    Life Application

Galatians 5:11 calls us to embrace the “offense” of the Cross, to stand firm in the truth of the Gospel, even when it contradicts popular opinion. It encourages us not to dilute the Gospel to make it more palatable, but to present it in its raw, transformative power.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

“Beloved, remember that the world may resist the message of the Cross. It challenges the proud and lifts the humble. It confounds the wise and enlightens the simple. Do not be disheartened if you face opposition. For in your faithfulness, you bear witness to my love and mercy.”

    Prayer Prompt

Lord, help us to boldly proclaim the Gospel in its fullness, no matter the pushback we may receive. May we always honor the power of Your Cross and the grace it represents. Amen.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Ques: Why is the cross considered offensive?
Ans: The cross is offensive because it states that our human efforts or good deeds cannot earn salvation, which goes against the human instinct of self-justification.
Ques: What does preaching circumcision mean in the verse?
Ans: It refers to adhering to the law or rituals for righteousness, instead of relying on Christ’s sacrifice.
    Ques: Why was Paul persecuted?
Ans: Paul was persecuted for preaching the Gospel of Christ effectively negating the need for the Mosaic law for salvation.
Ques: How can this verse be applied today?
Ans: The verse encourages us to hold fast to the Gospel’s truth, even when it contradicts societal norms. It reminds us that the Gospel’s power lies in its raw truth, not a diluted, more palatable version.

    Related Verses
