King James Version (KJV): If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it; he shall restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep.

New International Version (NIV): Whoever steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters it or sells it must pay back five head of cattle for the ox and four sheep for the sheep.

    Introduction

Restitution is a crucial theme in ancient legal systems, emphasizing the restoration of balance after wrongdoing. Exodus 22:1 provides a clear guideline for justice when someone steals livestock. This verse speaks to the heart of fairness and the need for restoring peace in the community. As we explore this verse, consider how its principles remain relevant in today’s context of justice and personal responsibility.

    Historical Context

The Book of Exodus, traditionally attributed to Moses, was written to guide the Israelites in maintaining a covenant relationship with God. Set in the wilderness journey from Egypt to the Promised Land, these laws were given to establish a just society. Livestock was a significant part of Israelite life, serving not only as a source of food and labor but also as a measure of wealth. Thus, understanding restitution was vital for maintaining community harmony.

    Key Word Analysis

Steal: The Hebrew word ‘ganav’ implies taking something unlawfully. Stealing disrupts trust and community order. Restore: ‘Shalam’ indicates making whole or complete, highlighting the importance of mending the damage done. Ox/Sheep: Represent significant assets, vital for livelihood and wealth in ancient Israel.

    Life Application

In our daily lives, this verse encourages us to consider how we can make amends for our mistakes. Whether it’s a broken relationship or a personal failing, taking steps to restore what was lost is crucial. Seek forgiveness, offer restitution, and strive to rebuild trust in your community.
