    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): And the feast of harvest, the firstfruits of thy labours, which thou hast sown in the field: and the feast of ingathering, which is in the end of the year, when thou hast gathered in thy labours out of the field.

New International Version (NIV): Celebrate the Festival of Harvest with the firstfruits of the crops you sow in your field. Celebrate the Festival of Ingathering at the end of the year, when you gather in your crops from the field.

English Standard Version (ESV): You shall keep the Feast of Harvest, of the firstfruits of your labor, of what you sow in the field. You shall keep the Feast of Ingathering at the end of the year, when you gather in from the field the fruit of your labor.

    Introduction

Exodus 23:16 invites us into a rhythm of gratitude and celebration. This verse speaks of two significant festivals in ancient Israel: the Feast of Harvest and the Feast of Ingathering. Both serve as reminders of God’s provision and the fruits of labor. In a world often focused on scarcity and competition, this verse encourages us to pause, celebrate, and recognize the abundance with which God blesses us.

    Historical Context

The book of Exodus, traditionally attributed to Moses, was written to document the journey of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt to freedom. Exodus 23:16 falls within a section detailing laws given to the Israelites to structure their community and worship. These festivals were instituted during a time when agriculture was central to life and sustenance, emphasizing gratitude and community celebration.

Ingathering: Also known as Sukkot, marking the end of the agricultural year, it was a time of communal joy and thanksgiving.
