    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): And thou shalt make a vail of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen of cunning work: with cherubims shall it be made:

New International Version (NIV): Make a curtain of blue, purple and scarlet yarn and finely twisted linen, with cherubim woven into it by a skilled worker.

English Standard Version (ESV): And you shall make a veil of blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen. It shall be made with cherubim skillfully worked into it.

    Introduction

In the book of Exodus, God provides Moses with detailed instructions on constructing the Tabernacle, a sacred place where His presence would dwell among the Israelites. Exodus 26:31 focuses on the making of a specific article in the Tabernacle—the veil. This curtain was not only functional in separating the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place but was rich in symbolism that pointed to greater spiritual truths.

Today, we delve into the intricacies and deeper meanings behind the colors and materials of this veil, and what it represents in our journey of faith.

    Historical Context

The book of Exodus, traditionally attributed to Moses, was written during the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land, around the 15th century BCE. The Tabernacle was a portable sanctuary, and God’s instructions for its construction were given to Moses on Mount Sinai. The veil mentioned in this verse served as a barrier between the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place, where the Ark of the Covenant was kept. Only the high priest could pass beyond the veil, signifying the separation between God and humanity.

    Key Word Analysis

Veil: In Hebrew, the word is ‘parochet,’ meaning a screen or divider. It symbolizes separation and holiness.

Blue, Purple, and Scarlet: These colors are significant. Blue symbolizes divinity, purple represents royalty, and scarlet signifies sacrifice.

Cunning Work: Refers to skilled craftsmanship. The veil had intricate designs, showing the importance of beauty and perfection in God’s dwelling place.

    Spiritual Insight

Exodus 26:31 reveals the holiness of God and the necessary separation caused by sin. Yet, it also hints at the coming of Jesus Christ, whose sacrifice would tear the veil, granting us direct access to God. The colors and materials point to divinity, royalty, and sacrifice, all of which are fulfilled in Jesus.

    Life Application

For the modern believer, this verse encourages reverence for the sacred and the beauty in worship. It also reminds us of the privilege we have in Christ, who has removed the barrier between us and God. We should live with gratitude, embracing our access to the Father through prayer and worship.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

Beloved, reflect on the beauty and depth of My sacrifice. The veil once separated you from the Father, but now you can come freely into His presence. Embrace this divine access with humility and gratitude. I am with you always, guiding you in love and truth.

    Prayer Prompt

Heavenly Father, thank You for the sacrifice that tore the veil and granted us access to Your presence. Help us to approach You with reverence and gratitude. Let our lives reflect Your holiness and love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
