    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): (For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord sware and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:)

New International Version (NIV): …but he became a priest with an oath when God said to him: “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind: ‘You are a priest forever.'”

English Standard Version (ESV): …but this one was made a priest with an oath by the one who said to him: “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, ‘You are a priest forever.'”

    Historical Context

The book of Hebrews is generally believed to have been written by the apostle Paul, though not definitively known. The recipients of this letter were Jewish Christians, possibly living in Jerusalem, who were familiar with the Levitical priesthood. Repent: In biblical terms, repentance implies a change of mind. God will not change His mind regarding His decree about Christ’s priesthood.

Priest Forever: This emphasizes the eternal nature of Christ’s priesthood, unlike the temporary Levitical priesthood.
