    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): And the men were afraid, because they were brought into Joseph's house; and they said, Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for bondmen, and our asses.

New International Version (NIV): Now the men were frightened when they were taken to his house. They thought, 'We were brought here because of the silver that was put back into our sacks the first time. He wants to attack us and overpower us and seize us as slaves and take our donkeys.'

English Standard Version (ESV): And the men were afraid because they were brought to Joseph's house, and they said, 'It is because of the money, which was replaced in our sacks the first time, that we are brought in, so that he may assault us and fall upon us, to make us servants and seize our donkeys.'

    Introduction

Fear and guilt can cloud our judgment, leading us to assume the worst in uncertain situations. In Genesis 43:18, Joseph’s brothers find themselves in a moment of profound anxiety as they return to Egypt. Their prior experience with unreturned payment haunts them, causing their hearts to race with trepidation. This verse captures a moment of vulnerability and misunderstanding, a common human experience when faced with the unknown.

    Historical Context

The book of Genesis, traditionally attributed to Moses, chronicles the beginnings of the nation of Israel. This chapter unfolds during a famine when Joseph, sold into slavery by his brothers, rises to power in Egypt. Unknown to them, the brothers encounter Joseph while seeking grain. Their fear in this verse reflects the guilt and suspicion they carry from their past misdeeds.

    Key Word Analysis

Afraid: In Hebrew, the word used is ‘yare,’ indicating deep fear or dread. Occasion: Refers to pretext or reason for action, suggesting their fear of being entrapped. Bondmen: A term for slaves, highlighting their fear of losing freedom. Asses: Symbolic of their livelihood, adding to their fear of total loss.
