    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): And Joseph made it a law over the land of Egypt unto this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth part; except the land of the priests only, which became not Pharaoh's.

New International Version (NIV): So Joseph established it as a law concerning land in Egypt—still in force today—that a fifth of the produce belongs to Pharaoh. It was only the land of the priests that did not become Pharaoh’s.

English Standard Version (ESV): So Joseph made it a statute concerning the land of Egypt, and it stands to this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth; the land of the priests alone did not become Pharaoh's.

    Introduction

Genesis 47:26 is a fascinating verse that reflects a pivotal moment in Egypt’s history during Joseph’s time. This verse highlights Joseph’s administrative acumen and his strategic decisions that shaped the economic landscape of Egypt. It’s a verse that reveals much about leadership, provision, and God’s providence, inviting us to ponder its profound implications in our own lives.

    Historical Context

This verse falls under the account where Joseph, sold into slavery, rises to power in Egypt. Amidst a severe famine, Joseph implements economic measures to ensure survival, one of which becomes a long-standing law.

    Key Word Analysis

Law: In Hebrew, ‘law’ refers to ‘choq’, implying an ordinance or statute. Joseph’s law was not just a temporary measure but a lasting decree.

Priests: The exemption of priests underscores the respect and provision for religious roles in society, even during economic hardship.

This verse illustrates God’s wisdom bestowed upon Joseph, revealing His care for societal structures and the provision for His people. It teaches us about stewardship and the importance of wise leadership in times of crisis. Through Joseph, God ensured the survival of many, showing His sovereignty over all nations and peoples.
