    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us: this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.

New International Version (NIV): Do not let Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the LORD when he says, ‘The LORD will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.’

English Standard Version (ESV): Do not let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD by saying, ‘The LORD will surely deliver us. This city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.’

    Introduction

In times of challenge and adversity, where do we place our trust? Isaiah 36:15 presents us with a historical moment where the people of Jerusalem were faced with such a decision. The Assyrian empire was a formidable force, threatening to conquer the city. Yet, King Hezekiah urged his people to trust in the Lord. This verse challenges us to consider where we place our faith in the face of overwhelming odds.

    Historical Context

The book of Isaiah was written by the prophet Isaiah during a time of great political turmoil in ancient Judah. Around 701 BC, the Assyrian army, under King Sennacherib, was besieging Jerusalem. King Hezekiah, a faithful leader, encouraged his people to rely on God’s deliverance. This verse is part of a speech by the Assyrian Rabshakeh, aimed at eroding the people’s trust in God and their king.

    Key Word Analysis

Hezekiah: The king of Judah who was known for his faith in God.
Trust: Hebrew ‘batach’ meaning to confide in, have confidence.
Deliver: Hebrew ‘natsal’ meaning to rescue or save.
Assyria: A powerful empire known for its military strength and conquest.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse highlights the tension between human threats and divine promises. It reveals God’s faithfulness and the importance of trusting Him even when circumstances seem dire. It serves as a reminder that God’s deliverance is not always visible immediately, but His presence is constant.

    Life Application

In modern life, we face many ‘Assyrian armies’—challenges that seem insurmountable. Like the people of Jerusalem, we are called to place our trust in God. This means leaning not on our understanding but relying on His promises and truths found in Scripture. In moments of doubt, remember God’s past faithfulness and let it fuel your present trust.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

My child, when the world around you seems overwhelming, do not fear. I am with you, guiding and protecting you. Trust in My love and power, for I have conquered the world. Let your heart find peace in Me, and rest assured that I will never leave nor forsake you.

    Prayer Prompt

Heavenly Father, in the face of life’s challenges, help me to trust in Your deliverance and sovereignty. Strengthen my faith and remind me of Your constant presence. Amen.
