    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): For I have set my face against this city for evil, and not for good, saith the LORD: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.

New International Version (NIV): I have determined to do this city harm and not good, declares the LORD. It will be given into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will destroy it with fire.

English Standard Version (ESV): For I have set my face against this city for harm and not for good, declares the LORD: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.

    Introduction

Jeremiah 21:10 presents a sobering message from God to the people of Jerusalem. At a time when the city faced imminent danger, God declared His intention to allow its destruction. This verse challenges us to consider the consequences of collective disobedience and the seriousness with which God addresses sin.

In our own lives, we often face moments where we must confront the reality of our choices and their repercussions. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of aligning ourselves with God’s will and seeking His guidance even in dire situations.

    Historical Context

The book of Jeremiah was written by the prophet Jeremiah during a tumultuous period in Judah’s history. Around the late 7th to early 6th century BC, Jerusalem was under threat from Babylonian forces. King Zedekiah, the last king of Judah, sought advice from Jeremiah during this crisis. Despite the king’s hopes for a favorable prophecy, Jeremiah conveyed God’s message of impending judgment due to the people’s persistent idolatry and injustice.

    Key Word Analysis

Set my face: This phrase signifies a determined and unwavering resolve. In Hebrew, it conveys God’s fixed intention to execute judgment.

Evil, not good: In this context, ‘evil’ refers to calamity or disaster as a divine judgment rather than moral evil.

Hand of the king of Babylon: Symbolizes God’s chosen instrument of judgment. Babylon’s conquest was seen as fulfilling God’s sovereign plan.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse reveals God’s sovereignty and justice. While God is love, He is also righteous and cannot overlook sin. The impending destruction of Jerusalem underscores the weight of divine judgment but also points to the hope of restoration for those who remain faithful.

    Life Application

For today’s readers, this verse is a call to examine our lives for areas of disobedience and to seek God’s mercy sincerely. It encourages us to trust God’s plan, even when it involves discipline, and to align ourselves with His purposes through repentance and faith.
