    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): O vine of Sibmah, I will weep for thee with the weeping of Jazer: thy plants are gone over the sea, they reach even to the sea of Jazer: the spoiler is fallen upon thy summer fruits and upon thy vintage.

New International Version (NIV): I weep for you, as Jazer weeps, O vines of Sibmah. Your branches spread as far as the sea; they reached as far as Jazer. The destroyer has fallen on your ripened fruit and grapes.

English Standard Version (ESV): More than for Jazer I weep for you, O vine of Sibmah! Your branches passed over the sea, reached to the sea of Jazer; on your summer fruits and your grape harvest the destroyer has fallen.

    Introduction

In the midst of prophetic declarations, Jeremiah expresses deep sorrow for Moab, a neighboring nation of Israel. This verse captures the intensity of lamentation, portraying the profound loss and devastation that will befall Moab. Through vivid imagery and emotional depth, Jeremiah weeps for the vines of Sibmah, illustrating the personal and communal grief.

    Historical Context

Jeremiah, a prophet during the final days of the kingdom of Judah, wrote this as part of his prophecies against various nations. Moab was a frequent antagonist of Israel, often engaging in conflicts. This lamentation signifies both the personal sorrow Jeremiah feels and the broader divine judgment pronounced upon the nation.

    Key Word Analysis

Vine of Sibmah: Symbolizes the prosperity and fertility of Moab, now facing ruin. Weeping of Jazer: Jazer was a town near Moab, and its weeping signifies shared grief and devastation. Gone over the sea: Represents the extensive reach and influence of Moab’s prosperity, now cut short. Spoiler: Refers to the invading forces that bring destruction.

    Life Application
