    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): And Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so, that when any man that had a controversy came to the king for judgment, then Absalom called unto him, and said, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel.

New International Version (NIV): He would get up early and stand by the side of the road leading to the city gate. Whenever anyone came with a complaint to be placed before the king for a decision, Absalom would call out to him, 'What town are you from?' He would answer, 'Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel.'

English Standard Version (ESV): And Absalom used to rise early and stand beside the way of the gate. And when any man had a dispute to come before the king for judgment, Absalom would call to him and say, 'From what city are you?' And when he said, 'Your servant is of such and such a tribe in Israel,'

    Introduction

In the unfolding drama of 2 Samuel, Absalom, son of King David, stages a subtle yet ambitious move to garner favor among the people of Israel. This verse captures Absalom’s early morning routine—a strategic positioning at the city gate to intercept and influence those seeking justice from the king. With a charismatic approach, he begins to sway the hearts of Israel, setting the stage for a larger coup. This passage invites us to explore the interplay between ambition, influence, and integrity.

    Historical Context

This particular chapter highlights the circumstances leading to Absalom’s rebellion against his father, King David. The setting is Jerusalem, where Absalom positions himself at the city gate, a place of legal decision-making and significant social exchanges. His actions reflect the political unrest and familial discord that plagued David’s kingdom.
