    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): And his servitor said, What, should I set this before an hundred men? He said again, Give the people, that they may eat: for thus saith the LORD, They shall eat, and shall leave thereof.

New International Version (NIV): His servant asked, 'How can I set this before a hundred men?' Elisha answered, 'Give it to the people to eat. For this is what the LORD says: ‘They will eat and have some left over.’'

English Standard Version (ESV): But his servant said, 'How can I set this before a hundred men?' So he repeated, 'Give them to the men, that they may eat, for thus says the LORD, ‘They shall eat and have some left.’'

    Introduction

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the enormity of our needs compared to our resources. In 2 Kings 4:43, we encounter a situation where a servant sees only lack, but the prophet Elisha sees divine provision. This verse invites us to shift from a mindset of scarcity to one of faith, trusting in God’s abundance.

    Historical Context

This verse is set during the ministry of Elisha, a prophet in the Northern Kingdom of Israel around the 9th century BC. Elisha, succeeding Elijah, was known for performing miracles through God’s power to demonstrate God’s sovereignty and care for His people. In this context, Elisha is faced with feeding a hundred men with seemingly insufficient provisions.

    Key Word Analysis

Servitor: The Hebrew word refers to a servant or attendant, showing the roles within Elisha’s ministry. Set: To place before, indicating action. LORD: The covenant name of God, Yahweh, emphasizing divine authority and promise.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse reveals the faithfulness of God in providing for His people. It teaches us to trust in divine promises even when circumstances seem impossible. God’s ability to multiply and provide surpasses human logic and understanding.

    Life Application

In moments of doubt and lack, remember that God’s resources are not limited by our perceptions. Trust that He can and will provide for your needs, often in ways that surpass our expectations. Approach your challenges with faith, expecting God’s provision.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

Beloved, remember that I am the Bread of Life. Just as I provided for the multitudes, I will provide for you. Trust in My abundance, for My love for you is limitless. Look beyond your circumstances and see My hand working in your life. I am with you always.

    Prayer Prompt

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your abundant provision. Help me to trust in Your promises and see Your hand in my life, even when resources seem scarce. Strengthen my faith to believe that You are more than enough. Amen.
