    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): And they spake unto him, saying, No; but we will bind thee fast, and deliver thee into their hand: but surely we will not kill thee. And they bound him with two new cords, and brought him up from the rock.

New International Version (NIV): “Agreed,” they answered, “we will only tie you up and hand you over to them. We will not kill you.” So they bound him with two new ropes and led him up from the rock.

English Standard Version (ESV): They said to him, “No; we will only bind you and give you into their hands. We will surely not kill you.” So they bound him with two new ropes and brought him up from the rock.

    Introduction

The story of Samson is one of strength, betrayal, and redemption. In Judges 15:13, we find a pivotal moment where Samson’s own people bind him to hand him over to the Philistines, fearing for their own safety. This verse captures the tension and the irony of Samson’s life – a man chosen by God, yet misunderstood and betrayed by those he was meant to protect. As we delve into this verse, we uncover deeper spiritual truths about trust, faith, and deliverance.

    Historical Context

The Book of Judges, believed to be written by the prophet Samuel, recounts a time in Israel’s history when they were ruled by judges. Samson, one of these judges, was known for his supernatural strength given by God. This verse occurs during a period of conflict between the Israelites and the Philistines. The Israelites, out of fear of retribution from the Philistines, decide to hand over Samson, hoping to maintain peace.

    Key Word Analysis

Bind: In Hebrew, the word ‘asar’ signifies binding or tying up. This act was symbolic of submission and control.
Deliver: The term ‘nathan’ in Hebrew means to give or deliver. It highlights the act of handing over control.
Rock: Symbolic of strength and foundation, yet also a place of confinement in this context.
New cords: The use of ‘new’ signifies strength and security, yet they were ultimately ineffective against Samson’s God-given power.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse reveals the complex dynamics of trust and betrayal in human relationships, juxtaposed against divine strength and deliverance. It speaks of God’s power to liberate and His ability to turn acts of betrayal into moments of victory. Samson’s story is a testament to God’s unwavering presence, even when we are bound by circumstances.

    Life Application

In our daily lives, we may find ourselves feeling constrained by situations or people. Judges 15:13 reminds us that, like Samson, we can rely on God’s strength to break free from what binds us. Trusting in His plan and power, even when others fail us, can lead to personal deliverance and unexpected victories.
