    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): And it was told the Gazites, saying, Samson is come hither. And they compassed him in, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, In the morning, when it is day, we shall kill him.

New International Version (NIV): The people of Gaza were told, 'Samson is here!' So they surrounded the place and lay in wait for him all night at the city gate. They made no move during the night, saying, 'At dawn we’ll kill him.'

English Standard Version (ESV): The Gazites were told, 'Samson has come here.' And they surrounded the place and set an ambush for him all night at the gate of the city. They kept quiet all night, saying, 'Let us wait till the light of the morning; then we will kill him.'

    Introduction

In the narrative of Samson, we encounter a story filled with cunning and divine intervention. Judges 16:2 sets the stage for a pivotal moment in Samson’s life, as he finds himself surrounded by enemies in Gaza. His reputation as a powerful judge and warrior precedes him, making him a target of those who seek to destroy him. The verse captures the tension and anticipation of an impending confrontation, drawing readers into the drama that unfolds.

This passage is part of the Book of Judges, attributed to multiple authors, with Samuel possibly being one of them. Set during the period of the judges, around 1200-1050 BC, the book chronicles the cycles of sin and redemption experienced by the Israelites. Samson, a Nazirite dedicated to God from birth, served as a judge for 20 years and was known for his formidable strength, a gift from God that was contingent upon his Nazirite vows.
