    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): And when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw a wayfaring man in the street of the city: and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?

New International Version (NIV): When he looked and saw the traveler in the city square, the old man asked, 'Where are you going? Where did you come from?'

English Standard Version (ESV): And he lifted up his eyes and saw the traveler in the open square of the city. And the old man said, 'Where are you going? And where do you come from?'

    Introduction

In the book of Judges, we come across a poignant moment in chapter 19, verse 17. The encounter between an old man and a traveler in the bustling city streets is more than just a simple exchange. It reflects the deep-seated customs of hospitality and reveals the character of those involved. This verse invites us to ponder the broader implications of human kindness and divine purpose.

As we delve into this passage, let’s explore the significance of seeing and being seen, of asking and being asked. It is a reminder of our own journeys and the divine intersections placed along our paths.

    Historical Context

The book of Judges is a tumultuous narrative set during a time when Israel had no king, and each person did what was right in their own eyes. Judges 19 falls in a darker part of the narrative where social order was declining. The verse is situated in a story about a Levite and his concubine, highlighting themes of hospitality, or the lack thereof, in Gibeah. This story was penned during a time of tribal confederation, reflecting the moral and social chaos of the period.

    Key Word Analysis

Wayfaring man: This term translates to ‘traveler’ and in Hebrew, it suggests someone who is on a journey, perhaps vulnerable and in need of hospitality.

Lifted up his eyes: A phrase indicating not just physical sight, but awareness and acknowledgment, often used in Hebrew to signify a moment of realization or divine prompting.

Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?: These questions probe not only the physical journey but also hint at a deeper inquiry into purpose and origin, showing genuine interest or concern.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse reveals the importance of hospitality and seeing others as God sees them. It is a call to open our eyes to those around us, recognizing the divine opportunities to serve and show kindness. It reflects God’s concern for our journeys, both physical and spiritual, and His desire for communities that reflect His love.

    Life Application

In our daily lives, we are often quick to pass by those who are in need of our attention and kindness. This verse challenges us to be intentional in our interactions, to ask ‘Where are you going?’ not just as a question of direction but as an expression of genuine care and concern for another’s journey. In doing so, we reflect the heart of God and become His hands and feet in a world that is often indifferent.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

My child, in every stranger you encounter, there is an opportunity to extend My love. Open your eyes and see the ones I place in your path. Ask them of their journey, their burdens, and their needs. Let your heart be a vessel of My compassion, for in doing so, you entertain angels unawares. Remember, as you have done for the least of these, you have done unto Me.

    Prayer Prompt

Heavenly Father, open my eyes to see the travelers on my path. Grant me a heart of compassion and hospitality, that I may reflect Your love to all I meet. Guide me to ask the right questions and offer the help that others need. Amen.
