    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

New International Version (NIV): Rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.

English Standard Version (ESV): but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.

    Introduction

Humility is a virtue often spoken of but rarely fully understood. In a world that values self-promotion and the pursuit of personal glory, Philippians 2:7 presents a radical model exemplified by Jesus Christ Himself. This verse challenges us to rethink our understanding of greatness by showcasing the profound humility of Jesus.

As we delve into this verse, we are invited to explore the depth of love and humility that led Jesus to forgo His divine privileges, choosing instead to walk among us as a servant.

    Historical Context

Philippians is a letter written by the Apostle Paul to the church in Philippi around AD 61-62, while he was imprisoned. The purpose of the letter was to encourage the Philippians to live joyfully and humbly in their faith. Philippians 2 is particularly known for its ‘Christ Hymn,’ which poetically describes the humility and exaltation of Jesus.

    Key Word Analysis

Emptied Himself (κενόω, kenoó): This Greek word means to make empty or to divest oneself of rightful dignity. It emphasizes the voluntary nature of Christ’s humility.

Form of a Servant (μορφή, morphe): ‘Form’ refers to the true and essential nature. Jesus did not just appear as a servant; He truly embraced servanthood.

Likeness of Men (ὁμοίωμα, homoioma): Indicates not just similarity, but a full identification with humanity, with all its limitations and struggles.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse reveals the depth of Christ’s love and the model of humility He set for us. Jesus, though equal with God, chose to become one of us, walking in obedience and servanthood. This divine humility calls us to reflect on what it means to truly serve others and to live a life marked by self-giving love.

    Life Application

In our daily lives, Philippians 2:7 challenges us to adopt an attitude of humility and service. Whether in our relationships, workplaces, or communities, we are called to put others first, emulating the servanthood of Christ. This might mean offering a listening ear, extending help, or simply being present for those in need.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

Beloved, understand that true greatness is found not in elevating oneself, but in humbling yourself to serve others. I came not to be served, but to serve, and I invite you to follow this path of love and humility. In doing so, you will find true joy and fulfillment. Embrace this calling, My child, and let My example lead you.

    Prayer Prompt

Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of humility and servanthood shown by Jesus. Help me to embrace a humble heart, to serve others willingly and lovingly. May I reflect Your love in my actions and words, following Jesus’ example every day. Amen.
