    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): If thieves came to thee, if robbers by night, (how art thou cut off!) would they not have stolen till they had enough? if the grapegatherers came to thee, would they not leave some grapes?

New International Version (NIV): If thieves came to you, if robbers in the night—oh, what a disaster awaits you!—would they not steal only what they want? If grape pickers came to you, would they not leave a few grapes?

English Standard Version (ESV): If thieves came to you, if plunderers came by night—how you have been destroyed!—would they not steal only enough for themselves? If grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave gleanings?

    Introduction

Obadiah 1:5 is an intriguing verse that prompts us to reflect on the consequences of our actions. It puts forth a poignant question, a poignant comparison, and a stern warning. The verse invites us to consider our own lives in light of the stark reality of loss and desolation that it portrays, serving as a call to humility and repentance.

This verse also emphasizes the sovereign justice of God. It challenges us to reevaluate our attitudes and actions, urging us to understand that our deeds have consequences, and that nothing escapes God’s notice.

    Historical Context

The Book of Obadiah is the shortest book in the Old Testament and was written by Prophet Obadiah, whose name means “servant of the Lord.” The exact time of its writing is uncertain, though it’s believed to have been composed after the fall of Jerusalem in 586 BC. The book is a prophetic oracle against the nation of Edom, a near neighbor of Israel, who took advantage of Israel’s downfall.

    Key Word Analysis

Thieves/Robbers: These terms symbolize those who take away unlawfully or forcefully, illustrating the actions of the Edomites.

Cut off: A term signifying total destruction or eradication, used to describe the complete ruin of Edom.

Grape gatherers: Symbolizes those who take away, but leave something behind, unlike the destruction awaiting Edom.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse reveals the righteous judgment of God upon those who act unjustly. It underlines the principle that God’s justice is thorough and complete: nothing is overlooked, and every wrongdoing will be accounted for. God’s judgement isn’t random or partial, but precise and comprehensive.

    Life Application

This verse serves as a reminder to live justly, understanding that our actions have consequences. It’s a call towards compassion, fairness, and respect for others’ rights and properties. Furthermore, it’s a reminder that God sees all and punishes injustice, urging us to uphold justice in our daily lives.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

“Beloved, let not the ways of the world entice you into unjust actions. For as the sun rises and sets, so does my Father’s eye see all. He is the ultimate judge, and before Him, no wrong is unseen. Live not as thieves in the night, but as children of the day, walking in love, fairness, and truth.”

    Prayer Prompt

Lord, help us to live in a way that reflects Your love and justice. May we not be like thieves in the night, but like the gentle gatherers of grapes, considerate and fair in all our dealings. Remind us that You see all and judge righteously. Amen.
