    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): Seek the LORD, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Bethel.

New International Version (NIV): Seek the LORD and live, or he will sweep through the tribes of Joseph like a fire; it will devour them, and Bethel will have no one to quench it.

English Standard Version (ESV): Seek the LORD and live, lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and it devour, with none to quench it for Bethel.

    Introduction

The book of Amos, from which our verse today is taken, is one of the minor prophets, so-called due to the shorter length of these books compared to the major prophetic writings. However, Amos 5:6 carries a major theme, a call to seek the Lord. It’s a timeless verse that echoes the heart of God’s desire for His people to draw near to Him and live fully in His ways, or risk facing the consequences of their disobedience.

    Historical Context

Amos was a shepherd from Tekoa in Judah, who prophesied in the Northern Kingdom of Israel during the 8th century B.C. His message was one of judgment and hope, calling the people of Israel to turn back to God and warning of the dire consequences if they did not.

    Key Word Analysis

Seek: In Hebrew, the word is “darash,” meaning to “seek with care,” implying a diligent search.

Lord: The Hebrew word used here is “YHWH,” the name of God, signifying His covenant-keeping nature.

Live: This Hebrew word “chayah” can also be translated as “revive” or “recover,” suggesting not just existence but abundant life.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse reveals the loving nature of God who desires a relationship with His people and promises life to those who seek Him. It also displays His justice, as He warns of judgment upon those who choose to ignore Him.

    Life Application

Seek God diligently in your daily life through prayer, reading His word, and following His commandments. This seeking leads to a life that is not merely existing, but truly living in abundance, blessed by His presence.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

“Beloved, I too call you to seek the Father and live. Do not just exist, but thrive in His presence, enjoying the blessings of a relationship with Him. Do not let the cares of this world distract you from this pursuit, for it leads to life everlasting.”

    Prayer Prompt

Heavenly Father, help us to seek you daily. Let our hearts yearn for your presence, and may you fill us with the abundant life you promise. Amen.
