    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb.

New International Version (NIV): If any household is too small for a whole lamb, they must share one with their nearest neighbor, having taken into account the number of people there are. You are to determine the amount of lamb needed in accordance with what each person will eat.

English Standard Version (ESV): And if the household is too small for a lamb, then he and his nearest neighbor shall take according to the number of persons; according to what each can eat you shall make your count for the lamb.

    Introduction

Exodus 12:4 is a beautiful illustration of community and shared responsibility. In this verse, we find instructions given to the Israelites during the time of the Passover. The focus is on ensuring that no family is left without provision and that resources are used wisely. This ancient wisdom can still speak to us today about the importance of sharing and ensuring that everyone is cared for within a community.

Imagine a time when resources were scarce, and community bonds were vital for survival. This verse reminds us of the balance between personal needs and communal wellbeing, emphasizing that sharing is a divine principle.

    Historical Context

The Book of Exodus, traditionally attributed to Moses, was written around the 15th century BCE. It recounts the story of the Israelites’ escape from Egypt. Chapter 12 details the institution of the Passover, a pivotal event where God instructed the Israelites to mark their doorposts with lamb’s blood so that the angel of death would pass over their homes. This verse specifically addresses how the lamb, a key element of the Passover meal, should be shared among households to ensure sufficiency and waste prevention.

    Life Application

In today’s world, where individualism often prevails, this verse calls us back to community. It encourages us to look beyond our own needs and to care for our neighbors, ensuring that no one is left in lack. We are reminded to be mindful stewards of our resources, sharing them generously and wisely.
