    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): And he that stealeth a man, and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death.

New International Version (NIV): Anyone who kidnaps someone is to be put to death, whether the victim has been sold or is still in the kidnapper’s possession.

English Standard Version (ESV): Whoever steals a man and sells him, and anyone found in possession of him, shall be put to death.

    Introduction

The Bible, though ancient, speaks volumes about justice and human dignity. Exodus 21:16 reminds us of the sanctity of life and God’s stance on the grave sin of kidnapping. This verse not only applies to times past but also challenges us today to reflect on the value we place on human life.

    Historical Context

Exodus was written by Moses around the 15th century BCE during Israel’s journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. This verse is part of the Mosaic Law, which was given to the Israelites to establish a just society. The harsh penalty reflects the seriousness with which God views the act of stealing and selling another human being, a practice that was not uncommon in the ancient Near East.

    Key Word Analysis

Stealeth a man: In Hebrew, ‘ganav’ indicates taking away secretly or subtly, reflecting the deceptive nature of kidnapping.
Sell: The term ‘makar’ implies transferring ownership, emphasizing the gravity of treating people as property.
Put to death: ‘Muwth’ is a severe and final penalty, underscoring the act’s moral reprehensibility.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse underscores God’s justice and the high value He places on human life. It reveals His intolerance for actions that devalue individuals, reflecting His holy nature and desire for His people to uphold righteousness and fairness.

    Life Application

In our modern world, where human trafficking and exploitation still exist, this verse calls us to champion justice and protect the vulnerable. We can apply this by advocating for victims, supporting organizations fighting human trafficking, and speaking out against injustices.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

Beloved, my heart grieves for every soul that suffers injustice. Know that I see every tear and hear every cry. Stand for those who cannot stand for themselves, for when you do, you show my love to the world. My child, be a voice in the darkness and bring hope to the oppressed.

    Prayer Prompt

Lord Almighty, we seek Your justice and mercy. Strengthen our resolve to stand against injustice. May we be Your hands and feet, bringing light to the darkest places and hope to the hopeless. Amen.
