    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): And he made a covering for the tent of rams' skins dyed red, and a covering of badgers' skins above that.

New International Version (NIV): Then they made for the tent a covering of ram skins dyed red, and over that a covering of the other durable leather.

English Standard Version (ESV): And he made for the tent a covering of tanned rams' skins and a covering of goatskins on top.

    Introduction

The construction of the Tabernacle was a meticulous task, involving skilled artisans led by God’s direction. Each element of the Tabernacle holds deep symbolic meaning and spiritual insight. Exodus 36:19 speaks specifically about the coverings of the Tabernacle, made from rams’ skins dyed red and other tough skins. This verse might seem simple, yet it echoes profound spiritual truths about protection, sacrifice, and God’s provision.

    Historical Context

Exodus, traditionally attributed to Moses, records the deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt and the establishment of their covenant with God. Written during their wilderness journey, it details God’s instructions for building the Tabernacle, a sacred space for God’s presence among His people. In this chapter, skilled craftsmen like Bezalel and Oholiab took charge to execute these divine instructions with precision.

    Key Word Analysis

Rams’ skins: In Hebrew, ‘ayil’ signifies strength and sacrifice, often associated with substitutionary atonement. Dyed red: Red symbolizes blood and sacrifice, pointing towards atonement and purification. Badgers’ skins: The exact identity of these skins is debated, but they symbolize durability and protection, emphasizing God’s covering over His people.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse highlights the protective and sacrificial nature of God’s covenant with His people. The layers of coverings suggest layers of spiritual protection and the importance of sacrifice in maintaining the sanctity and purity of the dwelling place of God. It points forward to Christ’s ultimate sacrifice and the protective covering of His righteousness over believers.

    Life Application

In our daily lives, we are reminded of the importance of spiritual coverings through prayer, community, and the Word. Just as the Tabernacle was shielded, we too must seek God’s covering over our lives. Engage with the sacrificial love of Jesus and allow His righteousness to envelop you, guiding your actions and protecting you from spiritual harm.

My sacrifice is your assurance, My blood is your protection. Walk in the confidence of My provision, and let your heart rest in the safety of My presence.
