    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.

New International Version (NIV): Moses said to the LORD, 'Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.'

English Standard Version (ESV): But Moses said to the LORD, 'Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either in the past or since you have spoken to your servant, but I am slow of speech and of tongue.'

    Introduction

Moses, one of the most significant figures in biblical history, is known for leading the Israelites out of Egypt. Yet, in Exodus 4:10, we find him expressing deep self-doubt. His reluctance to accept God’s call is something many of us can relate to. Feelings of inadequacy often hold us back, even when faced with a clear path laid out by God.

This verse offers a profound lesson in faith and reliance on divine strength over personal ability. As we explore this passage, let’s consider how our own insecurities can be transformed by God’s power.

    Historical Context

The book of Exodus was written by Moses around 1445-1405 B.C. This particular moment occurs during Moses’ encounter with God at the burning bush. God is commissioning Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egyptian bondage. Moses, however, is hesitant and feels unprepared for such a monumental task, highlighting his natural human fear and doubt.

    Key Word Analysis

Eloquent: The Hebrew word ‘lo’ indicates a lack of eloquence or fluency in speech, which Moses felt acutely.

Slow of speech: This phrase indicates hesitancy or a speech impediment, contributing to Moses’ feelings of inadequacy.

Servant: Moses refers to himself as God’s servant, acknowledging his commitment yet highlighting his humility and sense of unworthiness.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse reveals that God often chooses those who feel least capable to fulfill His purposes, ensuring that His power is made perfect in their weakness. It reminds believers that reliance on God rather than self is the path to spiritual success and fulfillment.

    Life Application

In our daily lives, we may feel unqualified for the tasks God sets before us. This verse encourages us to trust in His provision and wisdom. By surrendering our doubts and fears, we allow God’s strength to work through us, transforming our weaknesses into powerful testimonies of His grace.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

Beloved, do not let fear or self-doubt deter you from the path I have set before you. Just as I strengthened Moses, I will equip you with all you need to fulfill your purpose. Trust in My promises and lean on Me, for in your weakness, My power is revealed.

    Prayer Prompt

Heavenly Father, I come before You admitting my weaknesses and fears. Just as You were with Moses, be with me as I endeavor to walk in Your will. Grant me strength and courage, and let Your power be evident in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
