    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): And the names of them were Aholah the elder, and Aholibah her sister: and they were mine, and they bare sons and daughters. Thus were their names; Samaria is Aholah, and Jerusalem Aholibah.

New International Version (NIV): The older was named Oholah, and her sister was Oholibah. They were mine and gave birth to sons and daughters. Oholah is Samaria, and Oholibah is Jerusalem.

English Standard Version (ESV): Their names were Oholah the elder and Oholibah her sister. They became mine, and they bore sons and daughters. As for their names, Oholah is Samaria, and Oholibah is Jerusalem.

    Introduction

In the Book of Ezekiel, chapter 23 unveils a powerful allegory that explores the spiritual unfaithfulness of Israel and Judah. Ezekiel presents two sisters, Aholah and Aholibah, representing Samaria and Jerusalem, respectively. This verse sets the stage for a profound reflection on identity, belonging, and faithfulness to God.

    Historical Context

Ezekiel, a prophet during the Babylonian exile, wrote this verse around the 6th century BC. His audience comprised the Israelites who were grappling with idolatry and political alliances that strayed from their covenant with God. The setting is a prophetic vision illustrating the spiritual adultery of God’s people through the metaphor of two sisters.

    Key Word Analysis

Aholah and Aholibah: These names symbolize Samaria and Jerusalem, respectively. Mine: Indicates God’s claim over His people and their initial relationship with Him. Bore sons and daughters: Represents the offspring of their actions and alliances, both spiritually and politically.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse reveals God’s intimate relationship with His people and their frequent lapses into idolatry. It underscores the importance of fidelity to God’s covenant and warns against the consequences of spiritual adultery. Through Ezekiel, God calls His people to recognize their true identity and return to Him with wholehearted devotion.

    Life Application

Modern readers can draw parallels between the historical context of this verse and the distractions of today’s world. It invites introspection about our personal allegiances and encourages us to remain faithful to our spiritual commitments, resisting the allure of contemporary ‘idols’ that draw us away from God.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

Beloved, know that you are mine, cherished and called by name. Like Aholah and Aholibah, you may wander, but I am always here, ready to welcome you back. Seek me with a sincere heart, and I will guide you back to the path of righteousness. My love for you is unchanging, and my arms are open wide.

    Prayer Prompt

Heavenly Father, help me discern the idols in my life that draw me away from You. Strengthen my resolve to remain faithful, and fill my heart with an unwavering love for You. Amen.
