    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): And the settle shall be fourteen cubits long and fourteen broad in the four squares thereof; and the border about it shall be half a cubit; and the bottom thereof shall be a cubit about; and his stairs shall look toward the east.

New International Version (NIV): The upper ledge also is square, fourteen cubits long and fourteen cubits wide. All around the ledge is a rim of half a cubit. The steps of the altar face east.

English Standard Version (ESV): The ledge also shall be square, fourteen cubits long by fourteen broad, with a rim around it half a cubit broad, and its base one cubit all around. Its steps face east.

    Introduction

In the book of Ezekiel, we are given a vivid depiction of the new temple and its altar. Ezekiel 43:17 provides specific measurements and orientation details about the altar, which served as a crucial element in the worship practices of ancient Israel. This verse may appear to be a mere architectural description, yet it offers deeper spiritual insights into the worship of God, the order, and the divine precision in His plans.

    Historical Context

Ezekiel, a prophet and priest, wrote this book during the Babylonian exile, around the 6th century BC. The vision of the temple, found in Ezekiel chapters 40-48, was meant to offer hope and a future vision for the exiled Israelites, promising restoration and the return of God’s presence among His people. The detailed descriptions emphasize God’s holiness and the importance of worship according to His design.

In every step you take, know that you are deeply loved and called to a life of holy purpose.
