New International Version (NIV): The gates of the city will be named after the tribes of Israel. The three gates on the north side will be the gate of Reuben, the gate of Judah and the gate of Levi.

    Introduction

In the closing chapters of Ezekiel, we find a detailed vision of a future city. This city, described with meticulous detail, symbolizes the hope and restoration that God promises His people. Ezekiel 48:31 is part of this grand vision, focusing on the gates named after the tribes of Israel. This verse not only highlights the physical layout of the city but also carries spiritual significance, reminding us of God’s covenant and His enduring faithfulness to His people.

    Historical Context

The book of Ezekiel was written by the prophet Ezekiel during the Babylonian exile, around the 6th century BCE. Just as the tribes had designated gates, we have unique roles in God’s kingdom. Trusting in His faithfulness, we can embrace our identity and purpose.
