    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): And of the children of the priests: the children of Habaiah, the children of Koz, the children of Barzillai; which took a wife of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called after their name:

New International Version (NIV): And from among the priests: the descendants of Hobaiah, Hakkoz and Barzillai (a man who had married a daughter of Barzillai the Gileadite and was called by that name).

English Standard Version (ESV): Also, of the sons of the priests: the sons of Hobaiah, the sons of Hakkoz, and the sons of Barzillai (who had taken a wife from the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite and was called by their name).

    Introduction

This verse in Ezra tells of the priests returning from exile, attempting to trace their lineage. It speaks to a time when identity and heritage were deeply intertwined with one’s role in the community. Today, many of us also seek belonging and strive to understand our roots, hoping to grasp our spiritual heritage. How can we uncover our true identity in God’s family?

    Historical Context

Ezra was written by the scribe Ezra, around 450-400 BC, documenting the return of the Jewish exiles from Babylon. Life Application

As modern readers, we can apply this lesson by seeking our identity in Christ rather than in worldly achievements or heritage. Embrace your role as a member of God’s family, and let this influence your daily actions and interactions.
