    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

New International Version (NIV): But Scripture has locked up everything under the control of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.

English Standard Version (ESV): But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

    Introduction

Our verse today, Galatians 3:22, calls to us with a message deeply rooted in the heart of the Gospel. It speaks of a universal condition of humanity and the transformative power of faith in Jesus Christ. It is a divine proclamation of our collective need for the Savior and the promise of redemption through Him who chooses to believe.

This verse, nestled within the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Galatians, unpacks the weighty theological truth of sin and salvation. It reminds us that none are beyond the reach of sin, and yet, all are within the reach of God’s saving grace through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ.

    Historical Context

The apostle Paul wrote the letter to the Galatians around A.D. 49, as a response to the Judaizers who insisted that Gentile converts must observe the Mosaic law. He wrote these words to clarify that salvation comes through faith in Christ alone, and not through legalistic adherence to the law.

    Key Word Analysis

Scripture: Refers to the Holy Scriptures, God’s written Word, the Bible.

Concluded/Locked up/Imprisoned: Comes from the Greek word ‘sugkleió,’ which means to enclose, shut up, or confine.

Promise: Refers to God’s promise of salvation and eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ.

Believe: From the Greek ‘pisteuó’, meaning to trust, put faith in, rely on.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse reveals that sin is a universal condition from which none can escape. It shows God’s promise of salvation is open to all who believe in Jesus Christ. It also highlights the importance of faith – not works, law, or heritage – in receiving God’s promise.

    Life Application

As modern readers, we must acknowledge our sinful nature and our need for a Savior. This verse encourages us to embrace faith in Jesus Christ, for it is through Him that we receive the promise of salvation. We are reminded not to rely on our works or on legalistic observance of laws but to rest in the grace of God that comes through faith.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

“My child, I understand your struggles and weaknesses. Remember, you are not alone in your battle with sin. But take heart, for the Father’s promise of salvation and eternal life through faith in Me is for you. Believe, and you shall receive.”

    Prayer Prompt

Lord, thank You for Your promise of salvation. Help us to always trust in You, believing in Your Son, Jesus. Guide us away from sin and towards Your grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
