    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing?

New International Version (NIV): ‘Who of you is left who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not seem to you like nothing?

English Standard Version (ESV): ‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Is it not as nothing in your eyes?

    Introduction

Often, we look back on the past, remembering the glory days and comparing them to our current circumstances. Haggai 2:3 is a significant verse that challenges us to reflect on the then and now. It invites us to examine our perceptions and attitudes towards the transformations that happen in life, whether it be in a physical structure like a temple or in our spiritual journey.

This verse is a reminder to us that our vision can sometimes be clouded with nostalgia, preventing us from seeing the potential beauty and glory that lies in the present and future. It’s a call to shift our focus from what was to what can be, trusting in God’s plans and purposes.

    Historical Context

Haggai, a prophet in the Old Testament, wrote this verse around 520 BC during the time of the Jewish community’s return from Babylonian exile. It’s part of a prophecy addressing those who saw Solomon’s temple in its former glory and were now seeing the restored temple, which seemed to pale in comparison. The verse reflects the disheartened mood of the people who were disappointed with the seemingly inferior rebuilt temple.

    Key Word Analysis

Left: A word indicating survival or endurance over time. Referring here to those who have lived long enough to see both the original and the rebuilt temple.

Former glory: This phrase refers to the grandeur and splendor of Solomon’s temple, perceived as a golden age.

As nothing: A phrase expressing the comparison between the rebuilt temple and the original one, implying disappointment and a perceived loss of grandeur.

    Spiritual Insight

Haggai 2:3 reveals to us that our perception of glory is often influenced by our human standards. It teaches us to look beyond the physical and see the spiritual significance. It also reminds us that God’s presence and glory are not limited to grand structures or past achievements, but can fill and bless our present circumstances, however humble they may seem.

    Life Application

In our daily life, it’s essential to remember that God’s glory isn’t confined to the past or to grand displays. We need to perceive and appreciate His presence and work in our current situations, whether it’s in our personal life, relationships, or even ministry. Instead of longing for the past, we should keep our faith in God’s promise for greater glory in the future.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

“Beloved, do not be disheartened when you compare the past with the present. Remember, My glory is not confined to grand structures or past events. I am here, with you in the present, ready to bring forth greater glory. Trust in My plans, for they are to prosper you.”

    Prayer Prompt

Lord, help us to see Your glory not just in the past or in grand displays but in our daily lives. Enable us to trust Your plans for our future and fill us with hope. Amen.
