    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:

New International Version (NIV): You boast, 'We have entered into a covenant with death, with the realm of the dead we have made an agreement. When an overwhelming scourge sweeps by, it cannot touch us, for we have made a lie our refuge and falsehood our hiding place.'

English Standard Version (ESV): Because you have said, 'We have made a covenant with death, and with Sheol we have an agreement, when the overwhelming whip passes through it will not come to us, for we have made lies our refuge, and in falsehood we have taken shelter.'

    Introduction

In our world today, many seek security in temporary or unreliable agreements. Isaiah 28:15 addresses this very issue, where people of Judah falsely believed they could escape divine judgment through their own cunning devices. This verse challenges us to examine where we place our faith and security.

As we delve into Isaiah 28:15, consider your own life: where do you seek refuge during life’s storms? Let’s explore the context and implications of this compelling passage.

    Historical Context

Isaiah, a prophet in Judah during the 8th century B.C., delivered messages from God during a time of great political instability. Chapter 28 is part of a series of ‘woes’ aimed at Judah’s leaders, who were relying on alliances with other nations and false gods instead of trusting in the Lord. This verse specifically exposes their misguided confidence in their own schemes to avoid God’s judgment.

    Key Word Analysis

Covenant with death: A symbolic agreement indicating false security. In Hebrew, ‘mavet’ means death, representing ultimate separation from God.

Hell/Sheol: Refers to the realm of the dead, a place from which no escape plan can save them.

Overwhelming scourge: A metaphor for God’s impending judgment, described as an irresistible force.

Refuge in lies: Seeking safety in deceit. The Hebrew word ‘kazab’ implies falsehood and deception.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse unveils humanity’s tendency to construct false refuges, relying on lies and deceit for protection. It highlights the futility of seeking salvation outside of God. Isaiah calls us to recognize that true security and peace come only from trusting in God’s promises and truth.

    Life Application

Reflect on areas in your life where you might be relying on ‘covenants with death’—false securities that cannot stand the test of time. Instead, seek to build your foundation on God’s eternal truth, through prayer, scripture, and genuine faith in His promises.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

Beloved, I call you to step away from the shadows of deceit and into My light. Let go of the falsehoods that promise safety but lead to despair. I am your refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Trust in Me, for My love and truth are your true shelter.

    Prayer Prompt

Heavenly Father, guide me to seek refuge in Your truth and not in the fleeting assurances of this world. Help me to discern lies and stand firm in faith. Amen.
