    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): Therefore said we, that it shall be, when they should so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say again, Behold the pattern of the altar of the LORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between us and you.

New International Version (NIV): And we said, 'If they ever say this to us, or to our descendants, we will answer: Look at the replica of the LORD’s altar, which our ancestors built, not for burnt offerings and sacrifices, but as a witness between us and you.'

English Standard Version (ESV): And we thought, 'If this should be said to us or to our descendants in time to come, we should say, Behold, the copy of the altar of the LORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifice, but to be a witness between us and you.'

    Introduction

In a world where misunderstandings can lead to division, the message of Joshua 22:28 shines as a beacon of hope for unity and mutual understanding. This verse captures an agreement between the tribes of Israel to ensure future generations comprehend the purpose of a symbolic altar, built not for sacrifices, but as a testament to the shared faith and unity among the tribes. It speaks to the importance of maintaining connections and understanding among communities, a lesson as relevant today as it was in ancient times.

    Historical Context

The Book of Joshua, traditionally attributed to Joshua himself with contributions from other authors, is set in the period after the Israelites’ conquest of Canaan. Joshua 22 discusses the return of the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh to their lands east of the Jordan after helping their fellow Israelites settle in Canaan. Amid concerns about potential future divisions, these tribes built an altar as a witness—symbolizing unity and shared faith with the tribes west of the Jordan.

    Key Word Analysis

Pattern of the Altar: The altar was a replica, not for sacrifices, indicating its purpose as a symbol.

Witness: A term used to describe the altar’s role in testifying to the unity of all tribes under God.

Generations: The foresight of addressing future descendants emphasizes lasting unity and faith.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse highlights God’s desire for His people to remain unified in faith. The altar serves as a tangible representation of their shared beliefs and commitment to God, even when geographically separated. It underscores the importance of community and the enduring nature of God’s covenant with His people.

    Life Application

In our modern lives, creating symbols and reminders of our faith can help maintain our spiritual connections with others. Whether it’s through community gatherings, faith-based symbols, or shared traditions, we can foster unity and understanding, reflecting the unity of the early Israelite tribes.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

Beloved, I call you to build bridges, not walls, among your communities. Let your actions and symbols of faith be a testament to My love and unity. Just as the altar stood as a witness between tribes, let your love for one another be a witness to the world of My presence within you.

    Prayer Prompt

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of unity and community. Help me to be a bridge of understanding and love among my brothers and sisters. May I always work towards peace and unity, reflecting Your eternal love. Amen.
