    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were upon the roof about three thousand men and women, that beheld while Samson made sport.

New International Version (NIV): Now the temple was crowded with men and women; all the rulers of the Philistines were there, and on the roof were about three thousand men and women watching Samson perform.

English Standard Version (ESV): Now the house was full of men and women. All the lords of the Philistines were there, and on the roof there were about 3,000 men and women, who looked on while Samson entertained.

    Introduction

In this moment of the biblical narrative, we find Samson, once a powerful judge of Israel, in a vulnerable state. The Philistines, his lifelong adversaries, have captured him. Here we find an assembly of thousands, eager to watch their enemy humiliated. This verse sets the stage for one of the most dramatic acts in the story of Samson, where he finds the strength to turn his captivity into a final act of defiance. This context invites us to reflect on themes of weakness, strength, and redemption.

    Historical Context

The Book of Judges, traditionally attributed to the prophet Samuel, chronicles the time between the conquest of Canaan and the establishment of the monarchy in Israel. Judges 16 captures the latter part of Samson’s life, who was set apart as a Nazirite from birth to deliver Israel from the Philistines. This particular scene occurs in a Philistine temple in Gaza, highlighting the tension between the Israelites and Philistines during this era.

    Key Word Analysis

House/Temple: The term refers to a significant public building, central to Philistine culture and religion, symbolizing their power.
Lords of the Philistines: The rulers or chiefs of the Philistine tribes, representing the political and military authority.
Made sport/Perform: This phrase indicates Samson’s degradation, as he is forced to entertain his captors, a stark contrast to his past victories.
Roof: In ancient architecture, roofs were used for gatherings, and here they signify the large audience witnessing the event.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse reminds us of the humbling of the powerful and the eventual triumph of divine justice. It speaks to the dynamic interplay between human weakness and divine strength, where God can use even the most dire situations for His purposes.

    Life Application

In our daily lives, we may find ourselves feeling trapped or defeated. Yet, Samson’s story encourages us to seek strength in God, trusting that He can transform our lowest moments into acts of courage and redemption.
