King James Version (KJV): And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.

New International Version (NIV): If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.

English Standard Version (ESV): If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.

    Introduction

Conflict is an inevitable part of life, even within the church community. Matthew 18:17 provides a biblical framework for addressing such disputes in a loving and structured manner. This verse is part of a broader passage where Jesus outlines steps for reconciliation, emphasizing the importance of community and accountability. Let’s delve into the wisdom of this scripture and explore how it applies to our relationships today.

    Historical Context

The Gospel of Matthew is traditionally attributed to Matthew, one of Jesus’ twelve apostles. Written around 70-80 AD, Matthew’s Gospel is aimed at a Jewish-Christian audience and emphasizes Jesus as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies. In Matthew 18, Jesus teaches his disciples about humility, forgiveness, and community living, setting a standard for resolving conflicts within the church.

    Key Word Analysis

Heathen and publican: These terms were used to describe those outside the Jewish faith and societal norms, symbolizing separation from the community. Life Application

In our daily lives, Matthew 18:17 encourages us to approach conflicts with humility and openness. We are reminded to involve trusted community members when personal attempts at reconciliation fail, ensuring that our actions are guided by wisdom and not by personal vendettas. This process not only seeks resolution but also fosters growth and understanding within our relationships.
